1980 Ford DT2418 JP806
Pulling up out of the Rakaia Gorge. Quite a steep little pinch and due to two bridges, one of which is one way, no chance to get a good run at the hill. A 2418 lovingly restored by the Garrity Bros from the North Island (now operated by two cousins!) for Wairarapa Transport. They had a Perkins powered KT Dodge in the 2007 event and this time bought another with Detroit power, complete with original wooden sheep crate. We got the DT2418 which had the troublesome Cummins 504 motor. The 2417 option with the Perkins 510/540 never came to NZ. The Cummins VALE/YALE motor screamed but blew up in equal proportions! Note the bar under the front to protect the low hanging radiator. Pretty sure this was not a factory fit, but a very good idea as radiators in these were wiped out fairly regularly! A fair number of these, and the earlier DT1000 were four axle but were really too light for a lot of the work they were expected to do in NZ. (Howard Pettigrew)
