Coming up the incline on the far side of Arthur's Pass. This viaduct replaced a dangerous zigzag which was one of the steepest bits of road in New Zealand. Trucks pulling B trains - double trailer units popular in New Zealand, had to split their trailers and pull one over, then go back for the other adding much extra time and cost. The viaduct was an amazing engineering feat when it was completed and my photo just doesn't do it justice as to how far it is above the river below. Many cars, trucks and buses came to grief on this stretch of road in years gone by, and I had the huge scare of losing my brakes towing a trailer over this Pass - even though it said not to - but I was young and foolish!
