Not on the run but one of the local trucks that turned out for the display at Sheffield. There are heaps of these 'Deuce and a half' trucks to be found in New Zealand, some being left from when US forces were stationed here but also many were returned from the Pacific Islands and rebuilt by Gillies of Oamaru in what is one of the biggest con jobs ever pulled on the NZ Government. Through some nice trickery Gillies was paid by the Government to recover these trucks from various sites in the Pacific and they were then reconditioned by Gillies Engineering and sold to the truck-starved transport operators all over New Zealand. While nominally rated at 2½ tons, many were cut down to tractor units and used as loggers and the loads that were asked to pull was unbelievable. Repowering with a Perkins diesel was a popular option. I can still remember seeing lots of these still being used on our West Coast in the 1970s by the likes of power companies for their pole hoist trucks, etc. They were also popular for top dressing paddocks with lime and super phosphate, etc. (Howard Pettigrew)
