Leyland Super Hippo 7600UP
Leyland Super Hippo 7600UP (1963 reg), a cancelled Brazilian order went to work in Manchester instead after a period with Cooks of Consett, the company that now builds Elddis caravans and motorhomes. The Elddis name came from Siddle Cook: it is Siddle spelt backwards.
Bob Carruthers of Carrutherstown converted it to this recovery vehicle after it left Siddle Cook. Recovery gear appears to be a Holmes WD45 set most likely off a Diamond T 969. (Brian Hancock with additional information from Paul Pearman, Mike Przyrembel, Jonathan Pye & Jim Wells)
Gordon McLaughlin writes ... I remember hearing that the reversed name, Elddis v Siddle, resulted from the terms under which Siddle Cook originally sold his transport business. According to my information, he had to agree not to go back into haulage for a specified period and lost the right to use the name Siddle Cook in connection with any later business activity. He was so keen to get back into road transport that he had his fleet of vans on the road on the stroke of midnight on the day that the specified period expired. They were a familiar sight up here and it took me quite a while to connect Elddis Transport with Siddle Cook. In fact, I thought at first it must be a Welsh firm!
