AEC Matador 762VW (TP)

AEC Matador 762VW (TP)

The northern portal of the Blackwall Tunnel at Poplar, London E.14, in the days when it was just a single bore tunnel carrying traffic in both directions.

The Matador with the stylish coachbuilt cab and workshop has an Essex trade plate. and is working for F. G. Smith (Motors) Ltd [Coachbuilders – Motor Engineers – Agents] of High Road, Goodmayes, Essex, about seven miles from the tunnel. Perhaps they built the Mat themselves? Like the London Transport examples, the F. G. Smith Mat has 9.00–20 tyres rather than the large section military tyres favoured by many breakdown firms that used ex-WD Matadors for recovery.

It has the letters 'SM' on the side. What do they stand for?
The two blokes in the back of the Austin A40 pick-up (Kent reg KFN3) have a grandstand view. The broken down lorry is a Commer. (Ken Reid) #1
