Aveling-Barford Ltd, Invicta Works, Houghton Road, Grantham, Lincs.
Thomas Aveling and Richard Porter built their first road roller in 1865 in Rochester. William Barford and Thomas Perkins produced their first roller in 1887 in Peterborough. In 1921 the founders' sons T.L. Aveling and J.G. Barford established the Agricultural and General Engineers consortium but it collapsed in 1932. Aveling-Barford Ltd was formed therefrom in 1933, relocating to Grantham (where Ruston & Hornsby had space available) and became the world's largest maker of road rollers. Production of earthmoving machinery began in 1936 and in 1967 the company was absorbed into British Leyland's Special Products Division. Nowadays Aveling-Barford RD rigid haulers are made by Norwegian dumptruck manufacturer Doosan Moxy. Barford Construction Equipment (owned by the Invictas Group) continues to manufacture Barford site dumpers at the Invicta Works.
